Course Description

Ageism, which is bias and discrimination based on age has profound harmful effects on our mental and physical health as we age. Beliefs about aging are overwhelmingly negative in America. Even though they often operate unconsciously, they harm all of us. This course, presented by the preeminent ageism researcher, Dr. Becca Levy, will define the Stereotype Embodiment Theory, list cultural differences related to age beliefs and health outcomes, and teach a model for challenging ageist thoughts.


Educational Objectives

After attending this beginner-level program in full, participants will be able to:

  • List cultural differences related to age beliefs 
  • Discuss how our beliefs about aging impact our physical and mental health as we age

About the Presenter/Guest

Becca Levy, PhD


Dr. Becca Levy, the leading authority on how beliefs about aging influence aging health, is Professor of Epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health and Professor of Psychology at Yale University. Her path finding studies have changed the way we think about aging and have received awards from the American Psychological Association, the Gerontological Society of America, and the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics. Dr. Levy has given invited testimony before the US Senate on the adverse effects of ageism and has contributed to US Supreme Court briefs to fight age-discrimination. She serves as a scientific advisor to the World Health Organization’s Campaign to Combat Ageism.

She received her Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Division of Aging and the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Her expertise on aging is frequently sought out by outlets such as, The New York Times, NPR, and BBC.

She is credited with creating a field of study that focuses on how positive and negative age stereotypes affect the health of older individuals. She is the author of Breaking the Age Code

How To Earn CE Credits


Participants will have their participation registered through Center for Mental Health & Aging. This program is available for continuing education (CE) credit after the following steps have been successfully completed:

 

Step 1: Attend 100% of the course. Attendance is tracked via the online platform.

Step 2: Successfully pass the course post-test; a score of 75% or greater is passing. (You have a total of 3 attempts to pass the post-test)

Step 3: Complete the Course Program Evaluation & Attestation

Step 4: Download Your Certificate


Certificates of completion will be emailed immediately following submission of electronic survey and also available for download in the course platform. It's that simple!

About the host

Regina Koepp, PsyD, ABPP


Dr. Regina Koepp is a board certified clinical psychologist, clinical geropsychologist, founder of the Center for Mental Health & Aging.

Prior to founding the Center for Mental Health & Aging, Dr. Koepp was an assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and former staff psychologist at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, where she provided direct patient care and consultation on the Geropsychiatry Outpatient Mental Health team for more than a decade.

Dr. Koepp earned her doctorate at the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium and completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Emory University Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences where she won the Richard W. Morrell Community Commitment Award.
