Title: Health Psychology Basics: Understanding the Connection between Mental and Physical Health

When: Friday 8/26/22 12-3:15pm EST

WhereLive Synchronous CE Webinar

What: Continuing Education Course. 3 CE Credits/3 CMC Contact Hours

Presenter: Jennifer Steiner, PhD, ABPP

Course Description: Physical and mental health are strongly inter-related and mental health conditions are highly co-morbid in medical populations. However, few mental health providers have received formal training in the relationship between physical and mental health and how to simultaneously address both experiences in the clinical setting. This workshop is designed to provide therapists of various backgrounds with an introduction to the sub-discipline of Health Psychology. The presentation will cover theoretical models related to understanding factors that contribute to physical and psychological conditions, as well as health related behaviors. Common medical conditions that often co-occur with mental health concerns (and thus are likely to present to mental health providers) will be addressed. Participants will learn strategies to differentiate between physical illness and psychological distress. Challenges unique to being a mental health provider working with patients with co-morbid medical conditions will be discussed.

Educational Objectives: After attending this intermediate-level program in full, participants will be able to:

  • Describe 3 theoretical models used in health psychology
  • Explain the relationship between physical and mental health
  • Discuss the role of the mental health provider in the treatment of co-morbid medical problems
  • Identify at least 3 common medical conditions that may present in a mental health setting

Target Audience: This seminar is open to all Psychologists, Social Workers, Therapists, Geriatric Care Managers and other interested mental health and senior care professionals.

This program is intended for those with a beginning level of knowledge and experience related to this content.
