Course Description
Chronic pain impacts more than 1 in 5 adults living in the United States. Chronic pain can have a significant negative impact on all aspects of a person’s life, including ability to work or attend school, finances, social and romantic relationships, and sense of self. Research demonstrates that chronic pain is associated with an increase in risk for depression and suicide. However, societal focus on the physical impact of chronic pain contributes to increased stigma and further negative impact on mental health. This course/podcast will address the widespread impact of chronic pain on the whole person, with focus on the implications for mental health and the ways in which mental and physical health contribute to one another.
Educational Objectives
After attending this beginner-level program in full, participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 psychosocial ways in which quality of life is impacted by chronic pain
- Discuss why it is important to attend to both mental/emotional wellness and physical health when working with people chronic pain
- Explain the bidirectional relationship between chronic pain and depression
Target Audience: This seminar is open to all Psychologists, Social Workers, Therapists, Geriatric Care Managers and other interested mental health and senior care professionals.

About the presenter
Jennifer Steiner, PhD, ABPP
Dr. Jennifer Steiner is a board certified clinical health psychologist, founder of Beyond the Body Health Psychology Services, LLC, Co-Director of Center for Mental Health & Aging's Continuing Education Program, Adjunct Faculty at Emory School of Medicine, Board Member of the Georgia Psychology Association Board of Directors, Co-Chair of the Continuing Education Committee for Georgia Psychological Association, and Member of the Committee on Health Psychology and Integrated Practice.
Dr. Steiner is one of the first board-certified clinical health psychologists in the state of Georgia (certification received in 2018). Dr. Steiner received her PhD in clinical psychology with an emphasis in health psychology from Purdue University.
She has worked with over 1200 individuals with chronic pain over 10+ years. Dr. Steiner was previously employed as the primary pain psychologist for the Atlanta VA Healthcare System for 6+ years. Dr. Steiner has also published multiple peer reviewed articles on the impact of chronic pain on mental health, psychological correlates of chronic pain, and psychological interventions for those with chronic pain. Dr. Steiner's research and clinical practice focuses on chronic pain and interventions for chronic pain.

About the host
Regina Koepp, PsyD, ABPP
Dr. Regina Koepp is a board certified clinical psychologist, clinical geropsychologist, founder of the Center for Mental Health & Aging.
Prior to founding the Center for Mental Health & Aging, Dr. Koepp was an assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and former staff psychologist at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, where she provided direct patient care and consultation on the Geropsychiatry Outpatient Mental Health team for more than a decade.
Dr. Koepp earned her doctorate at the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium and completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Emory University Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences where she won the Richard W. Morrell Community Commitment Award.
