About the Course

Older white men have the highest rates of suicide, more than any other age group. Every individual working with older adults must have the tools and resources for understanding suicide risk among older adults and gain confidence in having that awkward conversation about suicide. In this workshop, you’ll learn risk factors for suicide among older adults, protective factors, tools for assessing suicide risk, and how to have a conversation with older adults about their mental health and mental health care in ways that draw them in rather than push them away.

After attending this beginner-level program in full, participants will be able to:

  • List 3 risk factors for suicide among older adults.
  • Describe 2 tools for assessing suicide risk among older adults.
  • Summarize 3 strategies for helping older adults who endorse suicidal ideation.
  • 1 CE Credit

    I'm So Glad You're Here!

For more than 20 years, I’ve worked with older adults in some of the largest healthcare systems in the nation, like Stanford, Emory, the Veterans Health Administration, and seen first hand the barriers older adults face in health care (and mental health care).

I’ve experienced first-hand the difficulty of helping older adults and caregivers find mental health providers trained to help them. In fact, the vast majority of older adults with mental health concerns DO NOT get the mental health care they need, resulting in worse medical problems, increased risk of dementia, higher health care costs, family strain, and needless suffering.

This has inspired my mission of ensuring that you, and all mental health and senior care professionals, have the tools you need to treat the mental health needs of older adults.

I'm Dr. Regina Koepp. I'm a Stanford-trained, board certified clinical psychologist, clinical geropsychologist and founder of the Center for Mental Health & Aging.

It's only with your help that we can meet the mental health needs of older adults and caregivers. So, thank you for being here and doing your part!
