Pain Psychology Certificate Program: Evidence-Based Tools to Transform Chronic Pain Care
More than 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. live with chronic pain—and many are turning to mental health professionals for help. Why? Because chronic pain isn’t just physical—it’s deeply psychological, often leading to depression, anxiety, identity shifts, and reduced quality of life.
This certificate program gives you the clinical edge: training in the three most essential and evidence-based areas of pain psychology:
- 1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (6 hours)
- 2. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Chronic Pain (5.5 hours)
- 3. The Impact of Bias on the Treatment of Pain – The ethical obligation to strive toward unbiased pain care for all (3 hours)
You’ll learn how to treat the psychological and behavioral aspects of pain, adapt care for older adults and group settings, and confront inequities in pain care. Through case examples and experiential practice, you'll build confidence in applying these skills in real-world settings.
Most importantly, you’ll deepen your ethical commitment to justice in healthcare by understanding how race, gender, and other social identities impact treatment—and how to reduce disparities through culturally responsive care.
Earn 14.5 CE credits and become a leader in ethical, effective pain psychology care.

This program aims to highlight the ethical obligation to strive toward unbiased pain care for all. There are gross discrepancies in the quality and type of pain treatment that is provided in the United States; empirical research indicates that social factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status account for the much of the inequity in care. Scholarly research indicates that these disparities in pain care are present across all healthcare settings in which pain treatment occurs. Although healthcare providers may be broadly aware that health inequity exists; few are well versed in this as it related to pain care. It is the ethical responsibility of any healthcare provider involved with pain care to be aware of these disparities and the factors, both on the part of the patient (i.e. social identity variables) and on the part of the provider (biases). Furthermore, awareness in and of itself does not produce behavior change. Evidence on factors that contribute to inequitable care will be reviewed, and strategies to combat biased medical decision making will be discussed. Additionally, the program will discuss specific ways to adapt the interventions for various different populations, including but not limited to older adults.

No. A certificate is a document issued upon the completion of a training program. It signifies that you have trained on specific skills, have knowledge in a particular subject, or as in this case, have trained with a particular individual. Certification on the other hand is a formal recognition of your expertise and competence. Certification often requires you to meet specific standards, pass rigorous exams, and many even include additional practice, consultation, supervision, and evaluations. While you will need to pass an exam, this course does not include many of these elements, nor a personal assessment of your abilities by Dr. Jennifer Steiner — making this a "certificate" program.
So while there are a lot of "certifications" out there — including some that are not endorsed by an actual certifying body — you need to be the judge of what adds value to your work and your ability to help your clients. This certificate does distinguish you as one of the small number of mental health and aging professionals who've trained extensively with Dr. Jennifer Steiner…and it's an acknowledgment that can set you apart in the eyes of clients and peers.
