Course Description

Diabetes affects more than 34.1 million people in the U.S. with another 87 million at significant risk for type 2 diabetes. With the prevalence of diabetes significantly increasing as we age with 29.2% of 65 and older Americans living with diabetes, it is critical that mental health providers have tools to navigate assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Depression is 2 times more likely in people with diabetes than the general population. In this continuing education podcast course, you will learn the prevalence and impact of co-existing depression and diabetes, tools for assessing depression in the context of diabetes, and effective treatment modalities for co-existing depression and diabetes.

  • Discuss considerations for selection, administration and interpretation of screening and evaluation measures.

About the Presenter/Guest

Mary de Groot, PhD, HSPP

Mary de Groot, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Acting Director of the Diabetes Translational Research Center at Indiana University. She received her Master of Education degree from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education in 1989 and her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Rhode Island in 1999.

Dr. de Groot is a clinical health psychologist whose research focuses on examining the mechanisms that link diabetes and depression as well as the development of accessible interventions to treat depression among adults and socioeconomically and culturally diverse populations with diabetes. Her research has been funded by the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive Diseases and Kidneys (R34DK074515; R18DK092765). Dr. de Groot has contributed more than 100 articles and presentations on the psychosocial aspects of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Her work has been published in the top journals of her field including The American Psychologist and Diabetes Care.  

Dr. de Groot’s service to the field has included Past President of the Behavioral Diabetes Research Group Exchange (BRIDGE), the premier behavioral diabetes organization and long-standing member of the American Psychological Association, the Society of Behavioral Medicine and the American Diabetes Association. Since 2011, she has served as an Associate Editor for Diabetes Care and a member of the editorial board for Diabetes Forecast. From 2017 to 2021, Dr. de Groot she served on the National Board of Directors of the American Diabetes Association. In 2020, she served as the President of Health Care and Education for the American Diabetes Association. She currently serves on the Research Policy Committee of the American Diabetes Association.

About the host

Regina Koepp, PsyD, ABPP


Dr. Regina Koepp is a board certified clinical psychologist, clinical geropsychologist, founder of the Center for Mental Health & Aging.

Prior to founding the Center for Mental Health & Aging, Dr. Koepp was an assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and former staff psychologist at the Atlanta VA Health Care System, where she provided direct patient care and consultation on the Geropsychiatry Outpatient Mental Health team for more than a decade.

Dr. Koepp earned her doctorate at the PGSP-Stanford PsyD Consortium and completed her post-doctoral fellowship at Emory University Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences where she won the Richard W. Morrell Community Commitment Award.
